Art Events not to Miss

The Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland's national archive and
promotion centre for new Irish music, has a 6-week vacancy from late
June for a part-time intern position working in its library. The post
is open to all library/archival studies or undergraudate music
students and will involve a range of duties related to the work of

The Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) in association with
their Sponsors, HB have announced the nominations for this year's
awards for amateur musical theatre. Our own Coolmine Musical Society
has been nominated for 4 AIMS Awards for it's recent show Mack & Mabel
for Best Overall Show, Best Director, Best Stage Management and Best
Actor. Dominating this year's awards was Beauty and the Beast, which
had been released this year to amateurs. Belfast Operatic and
Tipperary Musical Societies were nominated in the Best Overall Show
category in the Gilbert section whilst also picking up seven other
nominations between them. The Societies will gather in the Gleneagle
Hotel, in Killarney for the weekend of June 18th -19th for the
announcement of the winners.


Regular vistors to Blanchardstown Library will be familiar with Irish
Book of the Decade competition. The results are in and Comic-fantasy
novel Skulduggery Pleasant by Dubliner Derek Landy topped the poll to
decide the nation’s favourite Irish book, with almost 5,000 votes cast
over the last month. Mr. Landy was quoted as saying in the Irish Times
as saying “The wonderful thing about this award is that it was open to
every category, and so books for younger readers were as relevant as
adult literary novels,”

The award winning production of Showstopper in which a brand new
musical is created from scratch comes to the Driaocht Wednesday the
23rd of June. The show has already played sell-out seasons in London’s
West End and at the Edinburgh festival. Audience suggestions help to
create a show on the spot, as the all-singing, all-dancing cast
improvise with unpredictable and highly entertaining results.

This Saturday and Sunday coming Stagezone present the full stage
production of the Disney classic Jungle Book. The performance will
also have excerpts from up to the minute West End musicals from it’s
senior pupils while their younger pupils will present the timeless
story of ‘Cinderella’.

The ground floor gallery of  Driaocht currently plays host to The
Great Auk and Other Stories by Michael McSwiney while the first floor
gallery is home to Three Birds and a rabbit a new series of work that
reflects the nature of death and the emotions that it can reveal.

St Brigid’s Photography Group now in it's tenth year continues to meet
in Blanchardstown library every Wednesday from 7.00pm. For more

Irish public libraries are among the high-profile buildings on the
55-strong shortlist for the upcoming Royal Institute of the Architects
of Ireland awards. The winners will be announced on June 21st. There were 182 entries for
this year’s awards across 14 categories.

Four Irish public library buildings have been shortlisted for the
Public Choice Award:
Civic Precinct – Library, in Limerick, Cork County Library, Rush
Library – and Westmeath County Buildings and Library. Our own
Blancherstown library did not make the shortlist. To vote visit

Who Do You Think You Are an exhibition of the popular RTE series runs
until the 29th June. While an exhibition on the World Cup and the
countries involved takes place in the Reference Library

There is still time to catch up on some reading and join in on the
Blanchardstown libraries monthly reading clubs.

The Evening Book-Club will meet this Thursday 17th June at 7pm and will
discuss The life of Charlotte Bronte a significant study of the
enigmatic author who gave us Jane Eyre . The club is also planning a
day trip to Bernard Farrell's Bookworms in the Abbey on the 8th of
July. Discounted tickets for groups of 6 or more are available at the
Box Office so if you are a member of a separate book club or just know
a group of book lovers a visit is highly recommended.

 The Artistic Licence Team will be in attendance to record further
reading and of course join in on the discussion.

Some of Ireland’s most talented and most promising writers, musicians,
film-makers, visual artists, dancers and performers this week received
individual grants of up to €15,000 in funding from the taxpayer, the
Arts Council has announced.
A total of 111 individual artists from right across the country
received the grants as part of the Arts Council’s first round of
bursary awards for 2010. The Arts Council received over 650
applications and has offered funding totalling nearly 900,000 euro.

Ultimo Tango is Live in the Grand Canal Theatre Tuesday 22nd June
A hommage to Astor Piazzolla and other composers promises an
extraordinary evening of Tangos from around the world in Spanish,
Portuguese, French, German and English.

Following the sell-out production of All My Son’s last year, the Gate
presents Arthur Miller's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, Death of

GET BACK - THE STORY OF THE BEATLES PLAYED A SURPRISE GIG ON THE ROOF
OF THE OLYMPIA THEATRE this week TO LAUNCH THEIR SHOW WHICH OPENS AT
THE VENUE IN AUGUST. 'Get Back - The Story of The Beatles' runs in the
Olympia Theatre Dublin from Wed 4th August to Saturday 7th. Tickets
