Referendum 2024 – March 8th: Be Informed

Phoenix FM’s Charlie interviewed Ms. Justice Marie Baker regarding the significance of the referendum scheduled for March 8th, where Irish citizens are being asked to vote on two proposed changes to Article 41 of the Constitution.

During their discussion, they urged people to read the constitution text thoroughly in order to make an informed decision. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of verifying any sources of information and being cautious of misinformation surrounding the Referendum.

The first Referendum concerns the concept of Family in the Constitution, while the second aims to remove an existing section of the Constitution concerning the role of women in the home and replace it with new text recognizing the care provided by family members to one another.

Ms. Justice Marie Baker further encouraged people to ensure their voter registration is complete before the deadline on February 20th and to exercise their right to participate in the Referendum, reminding people that they have the right to a voice in these votes.

Ms. Justice Marie Baker is an Irish judge who has served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland since December 2019. She was appointed as Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ireland when the Commission was established in 2023. She previously served as a Judge of the High Court from 2014 to 2018 and a Judge of the Court of Appeal from 2018 to 2019.
