Seán’s Review
The Salt Path, based on the memoir of the same name, is directed by Marianne Elliot, stars Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs as Raynor and Moth Winn, a married couple who hike across the coast of England after losing their home.
I do feel that this film is intended for an older audience but despite that, I really enjoyed this film. Both actors deliver great but subtle performances. You can see that both are struggling with the situation they are stuck in but they still have love and support for each other.
For the first half of the film, Raynor is the driving force as her husband Moth is struggling with a terminal illness and requires more support. As the film grows closer to the flash forward that opens the film, he starts to find his strength and is able to provide a lot of emotional support and strength to his wife. This dynamic between the characters was very compelling as it coincides with the theme of the film about living life and how it is not linear, but a series of bumps and hurdles and from overcoming that comes happiness. Visually the film feels quite realistic with how things are shot; there is no need for any fancy camera work.
Overall, The Salt Path is a worthwhile watch and is a nice break from the much larger blockbusters that are coming out. I’d give it a strong 8/10.
The Salt Path is released in Irish cinemas on May 30th
