Christy(2025) – PhoenixFM Film Reviews

Daire’s review

Our titular Christy, played by Daniel Power, is thrown out of his latest foster home, weeks away from his 18th birthday. On his return home Christy is faced with a community and history that embrace him, for better and worse.

Power brings a steeled nervousness to his performances that is poked and prodded by various characters and environments throughout the movie. Similarly layered is Diarmuid Noyes as his older brother Shane. After growing up in the same house, Shane has built a safe stable life and will do what he can for his brother but too much distance and history have the brothers in painfully real tension more often than not.

Unsurprisingly, from those who brought us the original short in 2019, Director Brendan Canty and Writer Alan O’Gorman are able to inject an authentic Irish, specifically Cork, atmosphere and community. This is also thanks to The Kabin Studio, who’s members feature a characters and contribute not only  to the soundtrack but soul of Northside Cork.

On the verge of adulthood Christy has to decide for himself what kind of man he wants to be.
