Dáire’s review
Unsurprisingly, the well-accredited, multi-award-winning, and Oscar-nominated indie Belgian cartoon is a delight. With a similar artstyle to their previous work, 2020’s Calamity, writer/directors
Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang & Maïlys Vallade have created an affecting film centred around young Améile.
Following her on the highs and lows of her third year alive, the deceptively simple art style and animation immerse you. With vibrant colours and constantly motioning animation, the film embraces the inquisitiveness and novelty of being a newborn. Through this, it’s able to touch on identity and multiculturalism with an emotional complexity far beyond the years of our protagonist.
The movie’s subjective lens and soundtrack work in tandem with surreal visuals in pivotal moments for an ethereal, all-encompassing experience. This is all topped with exemplary performances from the cast, particularly our heroine, Loïse Charpentier, who captures the imagination and presence of mind that too many adults have long let go of.
A simple, heartwarming tale with an empathetic charm. Be sure to watch Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, 8/10.
