Working 9 2 5 – Tochi Ugochukwu

I have been with 92.5 Phoenix FM for my work experience in college for about a couple of months right now and I can say it has been a whole lot of fun and experience. Coming into Phoenix FM on my first day I was really nervous because I had no idea what goes on in a radio station plus the social anxiety was kind of growing a little in the moment. But after being introduced to the people in the station it was starting to ease up a bit.

Throughout the following weeks in Phoenix FM, learning about the difference between national radio and community radio, and learning the ways to the sound desk, I was starting to understand bits and pieces of radio sound. We had loads of opportunities to create certain things for Phoenix FM such as posters, social media posts, tiktoks, instagram reels, promos and most importantly our own personal radio show. Doing my work experience in Phoenix FM taught me quite a few things and not only on radio, it taught me how to write dialogues for certain shows/promos, how to operate the sound desk and receive calls on air, how to speak when recording , what not to say and not to do, how to promote shows and news and much more things.

With all of that useful knowledge I am using it towards the creation of my own personal show which I have named “Beneath Black”. It is a radio series based on growing up in an African household. I have recently recorded the 1st episode of my show with 2 friends as my guests and the process was really good even though we were nervous at the beginning. I am looking forward to recording more and learning more too. I will be posting and creating more content for my instagram page following up on my show weekly. Stay tuned for the updates and listen to my show airs every Thursday afternoon at 12:10pm.
